My Animal Friends Volunteer Position

In keeping with trying to tell about my life, I thought I would include something here about some volunteer work that I do. For the past few months, I have been a volunteer at Animal Friends in the North Hills area of Pittsburgh, and I tried, with the help of my able camera operator, Sister Clarice Carlson, to make a short film about it.

I recently got some new video software and I haven’t yet figured out all the bells and whistles on it. So this film lacks titles and smooth transitioning from one scene to the next. So, I guess my films will not win any Oscars…yet.

Below the film I have put the website for Animal Friends. If you are in the Pittsburgh area, it’s really quite a nice place to volunteer.

Again, once you push play, the video is taking a bit of time to start. So, please don’t give up.

Here is the website: www.animal-friends.org

  1. Oh my gosh, I want all of them!!!!! They’re so fluffy! Do you have any pets at home? I have a black cat – I got him from the humane society when he was a kitten – he was just a blackfurball and his hair stuck out in all directions. He’s been with me for 8 years. He’s so fluffy :) I adore cats, but dogs are awesome, too. I’m glad that the animals get a lot of attention at the shelter – I’ve always wondered about that. I love those cubby holes that the cats stay in – it really looks like a top notch shelter.

I think it’s so horrid that people breed animals just so they can sell them at pet store for a high price, while there are plenty of awesome animals at one’s local shelter. I mean, who cares about the breed, all dogs and cats rock!

And it was good to see you! I want more videos!! :P

  2. Dear Samantha,
Hi. Thank you for watching the video.
I agree that when there are so many needy animals, I don’t know why it is necessary to breed and breed.
We do not have pets at home. It’s a bit harder in community…even though there are some pets… because people move around for ministry needs, and we all come from different backgrounds and have different expectations when it comes to pets.
We have Sisters who grew up on farms and they would expect animals to remain outside. Then there are Sisters who would want a pet right on the sofa with them. So, it’s hard.
We do have a bird in our motherhouse. He belonged to a Sister who recently died (at age 95) and he now kind of belongs to everyone. His name is Pretty Boy (this would never have been my choice of names) and he is a parakeet who talks and dances around, and goes wild rining the bells in his cage. He gets out of the cage a lot and flies around landing on people’s shoulders and stuff. . I think i will do a little video of Pretty Boy.
    Anyhow, thanks for writing.
    Peace to you,
    Sr. Judy

  3. Hi Sr. Judy!
Are you still going over to Animal Friends on a regular basis? I’m sorry that I sort of disappeared after school ended at La Roche. If you still go over once or twice a week, I’d love to join you again! Let me know what days you volunteer and I’ll see if they work in my schedule. (It probably will, my summer schedule is much more relaxed since the college students aren’t around!) Thanks for the great video!!

    ~Wendy

  4. Dear Wendy,
